In The Third Year

"This year you will eat only what grows up by itself
and the next year you will eat what springs up from that.
But in the third year you will plant crops and harvest them;
you will tend vineyards and eat their fruit.
And you who are left in Judah,
who have escaped the ravages of the siege,
will put down roots in your own soil
and will grow up and flourish."
2 Kings 19:29,30

Have you ever had a promise from God but waited weeks, months, even years for the fulfillment? That is what I am writing about today. A promise, three years of waiting, and the fulfillment thereof.

And that is reason to rejoice and celebrate this great, amazing, kind, gracious, and loving Father of mine! He has proved Himself faithful once again, and I am humbled at His care and provision for our family. He really is true to His Word.
Those verses in 2 Kings speak of God's promise to Israel during a time of great need and in answer to Hezekiah's plea for deliverance, but one day in 2013, they became a clear and personal promise for me as well. If you've ever experienced an impossible need and a miraculous deliverance you will understand the significance of the Lord of all lords having mercy on us in our time of distress.
When we moved to Sugarcreek on January 1, 2013, we were not able to buy the house but (by faith) signed the contract for three years out from that date. Many fears assailed our souls and many pleas were sent to God for direction. On one such day, God gave me those verses. The amazing part is how it describes what actually has now happened, down to the very year!

In all honesty, even after such a specific promise I admit to periods of doubt and feelings of foolishness at choices we made by faith. The actual working-out of our decisions seemed all wrong from a purely financial, common-sense standpoint. But the foundation of our lives is that God our Father has a plan for us and we are safe when we trust Him with every aspect of it.

"But in the third year..." was the promise we clung to, and I am delighted to announce that in this, our third year in Ohio, we have finally bought our house and do not have to move out after all!
We are nearing our record of staying in one house for 3 1/2 years, but instead of making plans to move, we are actually able to fulfill the plan to buy the house and remain in it! It is astonishing, I know, but perhaps our pilgrimage from house to house is over. The official documents have been signed this very day!
Not that I consider for a moment that God has to do what I want Him to do. If He says, "Move!" We will move, but the burden that has laid on our shoulders for the past three years has lifted to such an amazing degree that we feel quite light and airy! If you find us skimming above the ground you will know why!

All the waiting has come to an end, all the questions on whether we have to move again and where, all the prayers for assistance in getting this whole process completed...it is officially over!

Are all the promises God has made to us fulfilled? No! Some that were given years ago are still not realized. But it is His mercy that we rely on from day to day, and we know He will keep His Word as we trust and obey Him step by step along this journey of life.

This world, this house, life as we know it on earth, will pass away. This is not a place in which I wish to remain forever. We still bear the marks of the "ravages of the siege" but we know through Christ Jesus we will put down roots and flourish because that is His promise. While we live here, we will trust Him to meet every need in His own good time.

We REJOICE with GREAT JOY in the God of our salvation! We are extremely delighted to call DOVERLEE our home! May it ever be a "peaceful, protective shelter" to all who enter. And may each of you be encouraged to hope in God for the needs you face. We have found Him to be a faithful Father.
