Garden Party

On a golden summer's eve Jacquelyn and I opened up our home and gardens to Rebecca Miller and her staff from Rebecca's Bistro. We hoped to create a small space in time in which we would have an opportunity to step back from the business of life, take a deep breath, and pause long enough to relax and enjoy the company of friends. For we believe that in the midst of the hurry that is a trademark of our day, this, too, is important.

The weeks and days and hours of planning, prepping, cleaning, mowing, weeding, and decorating are past and the gloriously sunny evening of this garden party is upon us. My daughter Jacquelyn works at Rebecca's Bistro and has had a desire to invite all of them to our house for an informal, outdoor gathering to celebrate their friendships. This is the year it actually happened!

It was an honor to be able to host these lovely ladies and I enjoyed getting to know them a bit better throughout the evening.

Jacki planned the menu with a tiny smidge of assistance from me. Some items got crossed off the list and others added until we came up with this array of tasty, summery, girls-party fare.

The savory spread...

Cucumber rounds with herbed cream cheese and lime zest; chicken, bacon and mozzarella on pumpernickel; and blueberry crostini with whipped feta and honey drizzle.

The dessert table, bright and colorful with raspberry cream cakes, a tall honey pistachio cake, and melt-in-your-mouth lemon shortbread squares in among the floral bouquets and trailing vines.

A mini tour of the garden...

Cake, coffee, and flowers to thrill the palate and sooth the soul.

In any large circle of friends there is a great variety of personalities and the possibility of opposing views on any given subject, I'm sure, but we choose to find common ground and to love each other. All of life is not a perfect paradise, we face many troubles, yet there is beauty all around for those who seek and ask and find the overflowing abundance of life in Christ.

"Whatever is true
Whatever is honorable
Whatever is right
Whatever is pure
Whatever is lovely
Whatever is of good repute
If there is any excellence
If there is anything worthy of praise
Dwell on these things"
Philippians 4:8

I had to try for a group photo but, once again, I am reminded that I'm anything but a photographer. What is so hard about taking time to arrange the subjects in order to actually see all their faces? Why do I rush through it without lining them up properly? You tell me! Just a guess, but it may be something with not possessing the skills required for the job.

Still, we had fun making an attempt at it!

One of the girls had already left but we managed to get most of the group together before the party was over. Thanks to all of you for coming and making it such a delightful evening for Jacki and me.

There is beauty, strength, and comfort in friendship. I'm thankful to God for this gift He has given us. And I'm so grateful that Jacki has found a workplace she loves, thanks to Rebecca's Bistro ladies! At the close of this summer's eve my heart is full of praise to my Father for His bountiful gifts, for the serenity of His Presence, and for the blessing of friends.
